What’s for Dinner? – May 24, 2013

Friday evening, May 24, was a cold and breezy evening (May!?!), so I thought about making a pot of chili. On weekday evenings, I usually don’t do a long, slow, simmering pot, though that is really the best way to do it. Anyway, I thought, “Why not make your own chili seasoning mix with Obis One black garlic products?” Great idea! I did a little research online and came up with what turned out to be a pretty good mix (maybe a new Obis One product?). Here it is:

4 teaspoons Obis One black garlic chili powder
3 teaspoons Obis One black garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
3 teaspoons onion powder
1 teaspoon ground oregano

This batch of seasoning was cooked with 2 pounds of nice lean ground beef (browned and drained), two cans of beans and a large can of crushed tomatoes. Normally I would drain and rinse canned beans, but in a quick chili like this, I think the “bean juice” in the can gives it some extra flavor and helps thicken the pot (though I know it also adds extra salt).

It was delicious! We had a nice warm bowl of chili last night and some leftovers to get us through a sort-of springlike weekend. Tonight, going to watch the Nationals host the Phillies and it will be a bit cool, I think, so maybe a bowl of chili before we go! Go Nats!
